The elegant French rider immediately found a good rhythm in Qualifying to claim fourth-choice of gate for both motos and rounded the first turn third in race one to set himself up for a good result. He could visibly close the gap to the leaders at will but overtaking has always proven difficult around the dramatic serpentine track which twists and turns its way around a natural amphitheatre. In the end a single mistake as he lost traction in a deep rut cost him one position but there was still all to play for in the second moto and, after securing the holeshot – his sixth of the series, the Kawasaki ace appeared to be headed for the overall GP victory as he led for eleven of the eighteen laps. Second place remained secure and ensured his fifth podium of the campaign; he retains third in the points standings, just eight points shy of the red plate, as the series heads to his home GP at Lacapelle Marival next weekend.
Romain Febvre: “My speed was good today and I got good starts both motos. In the first I was behind Prado and I was faster but it was really tough to pass; then I was behind Jeffrey (Herlings) and at the same time I saw Tim (Gajser) was coming back because I was stuck. Then I made a mistake in a turn; I tried to pass him again at the end but it was not quite enough. I knew with a good start I had a chance to win the GP, and I took the holeshot in race two, but Tim was better today; I did everything I could to hold him but he had some better lines in sectors three and four and I couldn’t figure out exactly where he would be able to pass. They were good points for the championship today but still I want more and next weekend we go to France for my home GP. “
Romain was the lone KRT rider in Germany. Regular teammate Ivo Monticelli will not race again this year after undergoing surgery on his shoulder and his replacement Mathys Boisrame will race the KX450-SR for the first time at the MXGP of Italy; the team recognised the necessity for Mathys to become more acquainted with the bike in training before entering the electrifying world of MXGP as he has previously only raced on the less-powerful 250cc machinery in MX2.
